This course utilized a scholarly exploration of the topic of adult learning via a literature review. In engaging in this course, I learned to define the role of the adult learner, and with this definition, I was able to reflect, read, and interpret scholarly literature developed that addresses the key question of “How do adults learn?”. As part of the learning process, I developed skills to analyze adult learners and the factors that impact their learning. I learned the importance of leveraging the lived experiences of the adult, how learning is a cyclical, lifelong process, and how motivation impacts adult learning. A project-in-parts approach was used to help cement learning, requiring the reflection on my philosophical ideals regarding adult learning via an interview and report, an analysis of the learner, strategic implementation of adult learning theory in a learning design being developed, the development of adult learning facilitation techniques and guidance, and a final learning pitch tailored towards the adult learner.
For the first assignment in this course, I was tasked with interviewing someone who was either an adult learner themselves or someone who designed learning for adults. After the interview, I was to synthesize the learning to further establish my own philosophical understanding of adult learners.
