In this course, I gained a comprehensive understanding of adult learning, encompassing the entire human life cycle from post-high school to late life. I explored both formal and informal learning contexts, such as classroom settings and workplace learning, and I learned to question whose perspectives and knowledge are included or excluded in adult learning scholarship. I have learned to characterize adult learners, understand the values and assumptions influencing their learning, and examine dominant and critical adult learning theories. I reflected on various learning theories, including critical, spiritual, embodied, and non-western perspectives, and considered the implications of power relations on learning experiences. Due to my progress in this course, I am able to articulate my understanding of adult learners, apply relevant theories to practice, identify appropriate strategies for working with adult learners, and appreciate the complexity and uncertainty in learning and knowledge production.
For the first assignment in this course, I was tasked with interviewing someone who was either an adult learner themselves or someone who designed learning for adults. After the interview, I was to synthesize the learning to further establish my own philosophical understanding of adult learners.
